What a weekend. Bowlarama went off. We are flat tack trying to get the mag to the printers so here's a straight copy and paste of the press release: The inaugural Wellington Bowl-a-rama has just wrapped. With a rain delay from Saturday the 16th to Sunday the 17th, Wellington turned on a beautiful sunny day and the locals ensured the support for the riders was at a constant high. The attending international professional skaters were all blown away by the hospitality of Wellington and have all said they will be back for next year’s event. Wellington Bowl-a-rama ’08 could not have been possible with out the incredible support of Oakley, Wellington City Council, WCSK8, F Beat Productions, 7 Ten Split Productions, Manual Magazine, Spitfire, Empire Skate Shop, Red Bull, Sandwiches Nightclub, Skull Candy and C4. There will be a half hour show presented on C4 in the near future, please keep an eye on the TV schedules for it. The Masters Event was run as a half hour jam for the 8 riders and showed that skateboarding is a pursuit for a lifetime and with the presence of such legends as
Lance Mountain (USA), Pat Ngoho (USA), Sasha Steinhorst (USA) and New Zealand’s own Andrew ‘Morri’ Morrison all the younger riders present have seen just what is possible if you choose to follow the skateboarding lifestyle. 1st Lance Mountain (USA), 2nd Pat Ngoho (USA), 3rd Steve Crump (NZ). The pro event had riders from the USA, Italy, Denmark, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The international field of 26 riders made judging very hard with such a highly competitive field. In the end the three standout riders for the top three positions made the judges job that extra bit difficult because of how close they were in scores. Rune Glifberg’s (Denmark) 540 at the end of the final heat was just enough to put him on top in First Place closely followed in Second Place by Benji Galloway’s (USA) mind bending runs of switch stance mixed in with highly technical tricks which just held off Omar Hassan (USA) in Third Place.

I was just looking through the archives and found this piece by Mat Hunkin from issue 15 titled Advice, Reinventing Yourself and thought you might like to have a read. First you were an EXTREME ATHLETE! Then you were an ACTION SPORTS PERSON! Previous to that, sometime toward the end of the ‘80s, you were a RADICAL DUDE! But now what are you? Hmm. We're all a little puzzled aren't we, not too sure whether skateboarding is on the down, still at the top, or for those who are real forward thinkers, rocketing back up. The constant upping and downing on this crazy rollercoaster ride called skateboarding trendiness inevitably leads us back up again, and subsequently back down.
Surely after all this upping and downing we must be getting better at bridging the gap in the low end of the trough, shallowing it out, keeping it all a little closer to the Black and not so far into the crimson depths of the Red. But let's take a (literal) look at that negative red trough again. An opportunistic look. It's not even a frown! You don't have to turn it upside down, it's a sneaky little grin for those in the know. For the Red time is the good time. It's the Starving Artist phase of the rockstar cycle. It's the rice and onion living that keeps you hungry and on the edge. It's where the good ideas come from. The frowning "In The Black" part of the curve 'aint doin' nuthin' but worrying about money and investment, and whether or not to pull out of skating before the shit hits the fan. It has no time to enjoy skating, it's too busy staring in horror at the corporate monster it's created that will one day destroy us all over again. And send us back down into the Red. Again.
Let's delve into my bag of parallel universes and metaphors, and compare the peak of skateboarding’s Black phase to Skynet/The Cold War/That Pre-Matrix bit where the machines start gaining self-awareness. Then KABLOOWIE, Skynet goes online, Regan gets bored and presses it, and whatever happens in the Matrix where they start farming us for electricity happens. This is the apocalypse, and it's a barrel of laughs. Yet the funnest part about an apocalypse isn't all the missiles' vapour trailing across the Pacific, nor is it the skyrocketing body count. It's the Post Apocalypse, the hangover of mass genocide that's kicking all the ass. When the investment apocalypse hits skateboarding, the bottom falls out of the market and skateboarding’s profile plummets below the scrutiny of the corporate and public eye, that's when the fun really begins.
Picture yourself in this post-apocalyptic world, if you will. Fanging out your sweet Hilux or Falcon (or Holden, if you must), windshield punched out, staring down the sun while you clock 180 kph over endless desert. Wearing leather pants, perhaps an eye patch. Warring over the last vestiges of unleaded 91 and fighting your way to The Thunder Dome with Mad Max and John Connor to catch Tina live in concert. Carrying a shotgun everywhere. Sure everyone you ever knew is dead, there's no food or water and vast tracts of radiation ridden no-mans lands riddle the Earth. But you're wearing leather pants for Christ's sakes, and everyone's got a motherfucking gun. People are ridiculously eccentric. The only businesses that still run are bars. It's lawless. It's a wasteland. No one is in control or watching you. You can do whatever you want. Humanity will find a way, and after this experience it'll come back stronger than ever. Life is sweet.
And therein lies your rope bridge across skateboarding’s depressing Red valley. For, when the Red trough comes for you, you must see that the glass is not half empty, 'tis half full. The skateboarding ship is not sinking. It's a sweet U-Boat laden with Nazi Gold that will surface again, in a safe port in a far-flung part of the world, having travelled a great distance below the radar. And we'll all emerge, rich and victorious and split the spoils. Well at least the officers will, after they've trapped the crew in the hold and drowned them. Err, okay so the Nazi metaphor may not be going down so well, but you get my drift. You may be in the skateboarding Red right now, it may be on your horizon like a dark cloud, you may be up out on the other side. But it'll always be there, and it'll be a land of opportunity. Security guards thin out. Hordes shrink. Spots become secret again. And you won't be a skateboarder anymore. You'll be a SUBVERSIVE PERFORMING ARTIST! And before you know it, you'll be totally shit-hot all over again.

The crew at Red Bull recently teamed up with the Remarkables snow resort and Travis Rice on a backcountry kicker project. Right beside the frozen Lake Alta they set up a 90 foot+ jump using an existing rock hip as the landing. After months of planning and weeks of set up work the crew had to wait out a series of storms before a window in the weather opened and they were able to hit the jump. Travis and Scotty Lago hit the kicker in trial runs in windy conditions as we waited, but unfortunately Travis and his crew had to leave NZ before getting a good day to shoot. Finally the foul weather departed and Red Bull riders from the UK Scott McMorris and Nate Kern, who were here filming for the BBC, hit the kicker. DC pros Torstein Horgmo and Jonas Carlson also made an appearance at the session alongside Local kiwi ski legend Jossi Wells was was one of the first to hit it.
Local Remarks rider Heath Patterson hit up some 360's as they filmed from the heli.

impromptu skate session in the shop so we went along for a looksy. The day today turned out really nice, the light came out perfect just after four, right on time for the crew to hit a

After a bit of a sleep in we headed up The Remarkables for some sweet shredding, luckily the light held out for us and we managed to find a few hits and bust out some “creative” jibbing. There is a pretty cool feature that JP and the boys are in the midst of building in the park, so stay tuned to check that baby out. After a hard day on the hill, we decided to chill out and head on down to
Hell. Turns out some
Las Vegas Cocktail makers are in town too. They sure know what they are doing. DAY 3 The weather gods haven’t been so kind to us today, flat light and a dash of snow here and there put a damper on what we had planned. I was lucky enough to ditch the camera bag for a few hours though and hit some fun runs through the remarks baby park.

We made a bit of a boo boo in the latest issue. Craig Bycroft's name was left off the list of skaters featured in his brother Bill's upcoming video. Big apologies to all involved. Rumour has it that the crew have been shredding it lately, pulling out the stops to finish the vid. Take a look at the
trailer if you haven't already.

The Billabong Slopestyle went off yesterday at Snowpark despite the weather coming in and out. Lots of 10s were thrown and many beers were downed.
Check the clip.
